Oh men and women of this fertile land
Here I’m with admonition from my side
Can I say our destiny is in our hands?
I mean our thumbs should say our mind
For we have seen again beautiful brides
Saying sweet words to justify past ineptitudes
Promising their wombs would bear us fruits of pride.
Let me say this: I love the land and I love you too
Don’t join to fight on streets or any violence to woo
Vote and watch religiously the counting of the votes
Carry no arms to kill a fellow in exchange for petty alms
Trade not your vote for some naira or even dollars
For it’d mean you sold future for chicken change
Posterity would read and judge you with rage.
Listen to my words, even though I was born few years ago
It might take another four years to have this power again
And karma only moves in its pace and unexplainable manner
Remember today’s decision is tomorrow’s destination
Your suffrage is all you own to witness a great nation
Where education and health are in the best positions;
Workers’ wages and pensions are paid before hypertension;
And our roads are not death traps that end our aspirations.
Put your trust in God but speak to Him through your ballot
For Him you trust bestows you sanity and crowns faithful’s efforts
Use your thumb as a tool for making the best decision
So you don’t harm your souls and those of coming generation
We either support the nation to prosper with our collective decision
Or we aid it to perish with our negative actions or inactions
Progression or regression, economic recession or its boom; we have options.
Do not fall for the beats of paid jingles or campaign songs
Or the oratorical memorised lines of lies from politician tongues
Find the truth in their speeches and weigh the realities
Yesterday, some built castles in air and sang songs of many possibilities
Got the power and claim their seat is one filled with many difficulties
Some would come with anointing from your priests, Emirs, Obas and Obis
Or they tell you they are the beloved of your greatest ancestors and benefactors.
Oh men and women, it is another time to decide, be a good ambassador
Remember it’s a game of numbers and not of loudest noise makers
When the results are announced seek solace in the due process
And find justice without bulleting humans, baboons or monkeys
That you satisfy your conscience with your will is the key
Do-or-die is a dead philosophy that should not be reincarnated
At the end, the winners too would exit and have existed.
A message of making our choices with sanity.
